In the Neurotransmitter Lab , we learned about the relationships between the different pairs of muscles in the body. Your body uses electrical and chemical signals to control movement of the muscles in your body. Neurotransmitters are released and sent to your brain to give your muscles the command to move. “Flexion” is a bending movement, like when contracting your biceps – bringing your forearm closer to your upper arm. This is described as a “flexor” muscle. The opposing muscle of a flexor is the “extensor” muscle. This is when you straighten the forearm. This is called “extension”.
In order to carry out this lab, we did the following:
- Place two electrode stickers on your biceps, two on your triceps, and one on the back of your hand. Connect the metal nubs on the stickers with the clips and connect them to the SpikerBox.
- Connect the box to your computer or phone and open the SpikeRecorder software.
- Turn the channels on by rotating them until you hear/see the activity during contraction of your muscles.
- Flex, relax, and extend your bicep in order to see the movement of the waves.
- You can do other movements, such as waving to someone, or doing push-ups. You can see the movement in the biceps and triceps.
Here are our results:
You can see both waves (top-biceps, bottom-triceps) of the movement in her muscles when Sofia flexed.
This is when Sofia was waving. As you can tell by the rises and falls of the waves, she was flexing and un-flexing.
This is when Sofia was doing a push-up. You can see the waves of the biceps and triceps working together when Sofia was flexing and un-flexing.
